Our Mission

To provide assistance to as many children and youth as possible who are unable to participate in sport, art, recreation or cultural activities due to financial limitations. Activities such as the arts, culture, recreation and sports are known to promote self-esteem, healthy growth, increased knowledge and personal development.

Our Background

Positive Recreation Opportunities for Kids (P.R.O. Kids) is a charitable program operated by the City of Saint John that matches children and teens (18 and under) in financial need, with organized, registered recreation activities. P.R.O. Kids assists families with the cost of registration fees, equipment and transportation for their children. Each year, hundreds of local kids are given the opportunity to participate in the sports, recreation, arts or culture activity of their choice.

P.R.O. Kids is a proactive and confidential service available to all children and youth in Saint John, Quispamsis, Grand Bay-Westfield and Rothesay. All administration costs are covered by these municipalities, allowing 100% of all donations to P.R.O. Kids to go directly to assisting the children and youth of our community.

P.R.O. Kids also receives support from over 120 local sports and recreation providers who donate spaces in their programs for P.R.O. Kids to use to place eligible children.

Families from Saint John have had the opportunity to apply to P.R.O. Kids since 2002 and the program expanded in 2005 so that residents of Quispamsis, Rothesay and Grand Bay-Westfield could also apply for funding through the program.

P.R.O. Kids is a unique concept that was developed by the City of Thunder Bay, Ontario and is now implemented in many communities across Canada. P.R.O. Kids is offered by the following communities in New Brunswick: Saint John, Dieppe, Edmunston, Hampton, Riverview,  and The Western Valley Recreation Association.

Almost 1 in 3 children are living in Poverty in Greater Saint John and over the past fourteen years, we have helped over 9,000 local children and youth to participate in many different Positive Recreation Opportunities.
